Farmington Public Schools

"Any school district that has a program, or doesn't have a program and is looking to add one, should consider LEIGHTRONIX."

–Sean McGuckin (TV-10 Teacher and Coordinator)

Farmington, MI—At Farmington Public Schools, Sean McGuckin is the head of the school’s student run broadcast station, TV-10. McGuckin uses TV-10 to prepare his students for a future in both television and Internet broadcasting, and give them hands-on experience with LEIGHTRONIX video solutions.

Farmington Public Schools LogoThe school district uses the UltraNEXUS™ to automate and schedule its broadcasts, the PEGvault-SD™ to capture events from remote locations and send the files to the UltraNEXUS, and
PEG Central® web hosting and video-on-demand streaming service to create and maintain an online video library.

"For us, the UltraNEXUS is used as a playback tool. We do also use it to send our content to PEG Central. That helps us reach a little bit larger audience and the goal in the future is to actually use the PEGvault-SD to do live productions either from board meetings or other high profile events that we would like to stream," McGuckin said.

Ease of Use

Working with teenage students who come in at varying levels of technical experience, McGuckin needed a system that he could easily teach his students while also creating a professional quality product. McGuckin said he has seen his students with very little technical knowledge walk out of his classroom and studio with complete competence and comfort in the system.

"It is a student run facility," McGuckin said "We wouldn't be able to do anything without them because they run all the equipment, they are the contacts, they are the engineers of creativity even. It's really nice to see the kids come in every day and walk out with a product like the weekly newscast, an interview, or a documentary. We've had a lot of successful people and students come through here."

McGuckin added that he thinks the user interface would be simple for anyone to learn regardless of their technical background.

"I think people could come in very easily and learn the system and use the system because it is unique and it works with the intended purpose to only work for this system," McGuckin said. "The nice thing is everything LEIGHTRONIX has set up works for their software... It's very straight forward and won't allow you to make mistakes."

Remote Recording

A big portion of what TV-10 airs is local high school sports. To cover these, the district utilizes a remote truck with a mobile station inside, at the heart of which is a PEGvault-SD. The PEGvault-SD captures video and can either transfer the file immediately to the UltraNEXUS for Next to Live™ broadcasting or storage, or can perform a scheduled transfer and send the file at a later time.

The PEGvault-SD is a huge asset for TV-10 and an integral part of their workflow. Without the PEGvault-SD, the station would not be able to easily record and broadcast events in remote locations. So for McGuckin, the reliability of the remote recorder is very important.

"Our PEGvault-SD sits outside and it goes, most recently, as close to zero degrees as you can get and can reach temperatures in there... of 70-80 degrees and potentially higher," McGuckin said. "Everything seems like a workhorse so far."

Online On-Demand

Everything TV-10 broadcasts on their station, they also put online on PEG Central, the online web hosting and video-on-demand service from LEIGHTRONIX.

"PEG Central is something we use all the time," McGuckin said. "It's become a great tool because not only does it provide more access for our programming and our content, it also provides a channel for us to communicate or advertise our channel or to advertise what we do a little bit more dynamically."

Adding PEG Central was something McGuckin initially thought would be difficult, but found with the hosting burden falling on LEIGHTRONIX and the UltraNEXUS automatically uploading the content, the process was much simpler than he expected.

"The ability for us to go online as easy as we did with all of our content, without having to create an account somewhere or host all of our content, has made a potentially very cumbersome transition, very easy."

McGuckin and Farmington Public Schools have been very satisfied with LEIGHTRONIX and their video communication solution. McGuckin has a product that is simple to use for his students but also generates a high-quality professional product. McGuckin said he encourages other schools to follow the lead of Farmington Public Schools and TV-10 and look into LEIGHTRONIX.
